2018 Champions - Bill & Boomer Jenks

The annual Father & Son Invitational is never short of drama, so it was fitting that the 100th edition was full of excitement coming down the stretch.  Bill & Boomer Jenks (Brae Burn CC) set the tone early on Tuesday morning, firing a solid score of 1-over par 72.   Later that afternoon, Winchester's Scott & Trevor Lopez put together a nice round of 74, but obviously was just short of catching the leaders.  Following Wednesday's action, the Jenks' remained atop the leaderboard, setting the stage for a fun Thursday.  The veteran group of Tom & Jeff Monahan (Vesper CC) bogeyed the 16th and 17th holes during a brief rain shower to shoot 73.  Next came the newcomer group of Jack & Lane Bohman (Eastward Ho!).  They three-putted the 17th for bogey to also post 73 and come up just short.  With daylight fading due to a 90 minute rain delay, several groups were unable to complete their round.  Having the option to finish Friday morning, a few groups came back to make one last charge at the leaders.  Both Eddie & Ollie Cordeiro (Belmont CC) and Dave & Sean Savage (Winchester CC) arrived at that course standing 1-over par with two holes to play.  The Cordeiro's bogeyed the 17th and then made a nice run a birdie on the 18th, but were unable to tie the leaders.  The Savage's made a spectacular up and down on the 17th to give themselves a chance on the last.  But unfortunately a bogey at the tough 18th also left them one short of tying the lead.

Once the dust (and rain) settled, Bill & Boomer Jenks were officially crowned our 100th Father & Son Champion.  Bill has been a regular on the New England amateur golf scene for years and Boomer is now rising up the local junior ranks.  They finished 3rd in the Age 13-15 Division in 2017, but taking the top overall prize has always been the goal.  Tuesday's round included three birdies and four bogeys.  The Jenks' are the first non-Winchester team to claim the title since 2010.

In all, 320 teams participated in the 100th playing of the Father & Son Invitational.  Four players were playing for more than their 60th time.  Garrett Gillespie (71 times), Ken Volk (68 times), Bill Hood (61) and Ralph Bonnell (60), along with so many players have been competing for decades.  We look forward to continuing the tradition next year!
